Grooming is an important part of your pet's overall health.
Regular brushing and combing stimulates the blood supply to the skin, helping
to produce a healthier, stronger and shinier coat. Regular grooming removes
dirt and dead hair and prevents matting. It also allows you to thoroughly
inspect you pet's skin for irritations or pests like ticks and fleas.
Grooming can also be an effective way for you and your pet to bond. It is
important to get him used to this routine from an early age in order for him to
associate grooming with a positive, bonding experience. Many pets learn to see
this routine of brushing as another source of attention and affection; almost
as an alternate form of petting.
A good quality brush and comb are a must. Choosing ones that fit properly in
your hand and is properly sized for your pet will help you to maintain your
pet's coat and skin.
Nails:
Trim your pet's nails as necessary, usually about once a
month. You'll need a high quality, clipper designed specifically for your pet,
preferably ones made of stainless steel. Scissors can be used, but a
guillotine-style clipper is generally more effective and safer as well. Have
some antiseptic and a small bottle of blood-clotting powder on hand just in
case.
Eyes:
Irritation and redness around the eye and/or a yellow or
greenish discharge can be a sign of conjunctivitis; a common infection caused
by bacteria that is easily treated by your veterinarian. Keeping the area
around your pet's eyes clean can help to prevent such infections. Specialty
“sterile eyewash” and “eye wipes” are available and are important to your pets
overall health and appearance.
Ears:
Ear care is also an important part of grooming. Ideally, check your pets ears
about twice a month. Painful ear infections and infestations, left unnoticed and uncared for can
lead to permanent hearing loss. Problem signs with your pets ears include redness,
odor, head shaking and constant scratching.
A cotton ball, moistened with warm water or a little mineral oil can be use to
clean the opening into the canal and the flaps. It is important not probe too
deeply into the ear canal though. Highly effective specialty "ear
wipes" and solutions are also readily available.
Grooming is a
very important part of your pets overall care and will contribute to his
overall health and wellness. Come up with a routine that is appropriate for
both you and your pet. Start grooming at an early age and remain consistent.
Your pet will be healthier and you'll both be happier for your effort!
